Oligospermia : Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

Male infertility is quite common these days. As a matter of fact, infertility is a health problem faced by around 10-15% of couples worldwide. Oligospermia is a fertility condition among men which occurs due to a low sperm count. According to WHO if the sperm count in the semen is of a concentration less than 15 Million per millilitres, a person falls under the bracket of this issue.

A few men can show no symptoms of oligospermia most of them get to know about that once they realize that conception is not possible for them. However, there are some common warning signs of oligospermia which include:

  • Thick discharge
  • Swollen and Enlarged vein in the scrotum
  • Sexual functioning issues like the inability to maintain an erection or other ejaculatory issues
  • Some also face pain while urinating
  • Pain, swelling or lumps in the testicle areas
  • Decreased facial and body hair or other signs indicating hormonal imbalances

Oligospermia can be diagnosed by a simple semen analysis which examines the sperm count, motility, abnormal & normal morphology of the sperm as well as its quality.

Causes of Oligospermia

  • Medications:

Beta-blockers, antibiotics, blood pressure medicines might cause ejaculation defects along with low sperm count

  • Environmental Factors:

Environmental toxins and chemicals affect sperm production

  • Chemical exposure:

Harsh chemicals, pesticides, cleaning agents and more reduce sperm count

  • Metal exposure :

Heavy metals exposure such as lead also cause oligospermia

  • Radiation:

Sperm production can be reduced by being exposed to radiation or X-ray

  • Overheating testicles:

Increase in the temperature around the testicles affects sperm production and quality. Continuous placing of laptops over your genitals or sitting all the time, hot water tubs and wearing tight clothing may all contribute to overheating

  • Lifestyle Factors:

Alcohol, smoking, obesity, etc are some widespread Oligospermia causes.

  • Drugs use:

Steroid medicines that are used to stimulate muscle strength and growth can shrink the testicles affecting sperm production.
